CCD Remembers Ron Ross, Transportation Committee Member
It is with great sadness and regret that CCD reports the passing of a member of our Transportation Committee, Ron Ross. Ron passed away on Friday, May 27, 2011.
Ron was a volunteer on CCD’s Transportation Committee for many years and had a wealth of expertise about various modes of transportation. Ron was a vigilant monitor of the progress being made on the VIA Renaissance cars. He kept a keen on eye the cars being stored in Thunder Bay and shared his information with us.
Ron was also very knowledgeable about the transportation issues of people with disabilities living in Northwestern Ontario. He helped CCD remain current about barriers facing Greyhound riders and possible alternatives to look into if Greyhound were to follow through with plans to cutback on routes.
Ron worked at the Hagi Community Services for Independence and helped to develop Hagi’s services. After retiring from Hagi in 1987, Ron volunteered on Hagi’s boards.
Ron also helped to develop PUSH-Northwest. At the time of his passing Ron was President of PUSH-Northwest.
Ron was a 1999 recipient of the CCD Award, nominated by PUSH Northwest.
“Ron was a strong and passionate advocate for people with disabilities over the past 40 years and he will be truly missed in our community,” states Amy Vaillan of PUSH Northwest.
“Ron has been a long-time advocate for accessible transportation and was very helpful to CCD during our VIA Rail case. He served on our Transportation Committee for a number of years. He will be missed. I always knew that he could be counted on and he helped CCD over the years on many issues,” states Laurie Beachell, CCD National Coordinator.
