CCD Part of Coalition Seeking to Intervene in Case Focused on Supports to Live in the Community
The Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD) will be applying to intervene in a case at the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal which raises issues of national importance affecting the fundamental human rights of persons with disabilities. CCD is collaborating in its proposed intervention with the Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL) and People First of Canada (PFC) (together, “the Coalition”). The Coalition is seeking to intervene on the issue of the interpretation and application of the test for systemic discrimination.

On April 10, 2019, the Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD), a national organization of people with various disabilities working for an accessible and inclusive Canada, testified before the Senate Social Affairs, Science and Technology Committee during its study of Bill C-81, An Act to ensure a barrier-free Canada. Steven Estey, CCD Government and Community Relations Officer, appeared on a panel with Kerri Joffe (ARCH) and Bill Adair (Federal Accessibility Legislation Alliance).

The Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD) is pleased to announce that its Chairperson Jewelles Smith was appointed as an individual to be a member of the Canadian delegation to the 63rd session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) that took place in New York City in March 2019. The UN estimates that one in five women will experience disability over the lifespan. In Canada, disability affects one quarter of women in Canada.
