Empower U: Learn to Access Your Disability Rights Training on Canadian Human Rights, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and its Optional Protocol (OP) training aims to increase awareness of how to address discrimination using more familiar Canadian human rights laws such as Human Rights Codes and the newer international Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). This is training for persons with disabilities by persons with disabilities. The training is part of a project funded by Employment and Social Development Canada and implemented by the Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD) in collaboration with Canadian Multicultural Disability Centre Inc. (CMDCI), Citizens With Disabilities – Ontario (CWDO), Manitoba League of Persons with Disabilities (MLPD) and National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS). Read more.

CCD Chairperson's Update - September 2014
New Initiative
The Centre for Research on Work Disability Work Policy awarded CCD a seed grant in response to a project proposal titled Willing But Unable: A Population in Waiting. The project will develop a profile of people with disabilities that will provide the basis for an in-depth review of federal/provincial and territorial income support programs that offer employment-related programs to identify the effective practices.
Canada Post
CCD and its member organizations wrote to Deepak Chopra to explain why Canada Post should not make doctors the gatekeepers to accessible postal service for people with disabilities.
Tony Dolan, CCD Chairperson, urged Prime Minister Stephen Harper to undertake a public review of the Postal Service Charter, which sets out the bench marks for postal service in Canada.
Canadian Museum for Human Rights
On 19 September 2014, CCD Chairperson Tony Dolan, Laurie Beachell National Coordinator, Jim Derksen and Yvonne Peters, both members of CCD's Human Rights Committee, were among the invited guests who helped open the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the first national museum to be built outside of the National Capital Region.
CRPD Outreach
Vangelis Nikias, CRPD Project Manager, informed Canadians about the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) at a number of different events sponsored by a diverse group of community organizations such as REACH, CCIC, Amnesty International.
Save the Date - December 2, 2014
CCD's research project Disabling Poverty/Enabling Citizenship will hold an open forum to report the results of its 5-year investigation focused on how to overcome the poverty experienced by Canadians with disabilities. Invited speakers: Michael J. Prince, Michael Bach, Yves Vaillancourt, Lucie Dumais, Francois Aubry, Debra Parkes, Cam Crawford, Adele Furrie, Marie Ryan.
