Happy International Human Rights Day!

December 10th is designated as International Human Rights Day, and I thought it would be a good time to update on where civil society is at with regard to the upcoming United Nations Universal Periodic Review. These past couple of years have been busy times for those of us who work towards full implementation of international human rights treaties! Between 2015 and 2017, Canada submitted reports to a number of the UN Committees and their related Conventions.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and part of the 16 Days to End Violence Against Women Campaign in Canada. As the Chair of the Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD), I have had an exciting and busy year.

CCD Will Be at the Supreme Court of Canada to Intervene in Canadian Human Rights Commission v. Attorney General of Canada

On November 28, the Council for Canadians with Disabilities (CCD) will be at the Supreme Court of Canada to intervene in a case called Canadian Human Rights Commission v. Attorney General of Canada. ARCH Disability Law Centre (ARCH) is representing the CCD in this case.

On 4 October 2017, Byron Williams and Joëlle Pastora Sala from the Public Interest Law Centre ("PILC") appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada (“SCC”), along with pro bono counsel Alyssa Mariani of Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP (“TDS”), on behalf of the Council of Canadians with Disabilities ("CCD") in the matter of Delta Airlines Inc. v Gábor Lukács. Sacha Paul of TDS was also an integral part of the team who worked on this case.
