Jamie Oliver Braille Publishing Milestone for Readers and Cooks of All Ages
Internationally renowned chef and bestselling author, Jamie Oliver, has two highly anticipated new books publishing with Penguin Random House Canada on Tuesday, November 14: a mouthwatering new cookbook, 5 Ingredients Mediterranean via Appetite by Random House, and his children’s fiction debut novel, Billy and the Giant Adventure via Tundra Books. Thanks to a unique partnership between the author, Penguin Random House Canada, and Canada's National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS), a digital and physical braille edition of each book will publish simultaneously on November 14.
NNELS is thrilled to partner with Jamie Oliver’s new publishing home, Penguin Random House Canada, as part of their mandate to publish as inclusively and equitably as possible.
5 Ingredients Mediterranean, a celebration of hero Mediterranean flavours and ingredients, contains over 125 quick and easy recipes for exciting everyday cooking. It will publish in standard print, eBook, and braille on November 14. The digital braille edition will be available for readers with print disabilities through the NNELS repository.
Billy and the Giant Adventure, Jamie Oliver’s first children’s book, contains one pinch of adventure, a dash of friendship, a sprinkle of mystery and a HUGE spoonful of magic. There are also kid-friendly recipes at the back of the book, and illustrations throughout. Publishing on November 14, the standard print edition has a dyslexia-friendly typeset, and the audiobook features a number of different voices, including Jamie Oliver as the narrator. The digital braille edition will be available for readers with print disabilities to download from the NNELS repository.
“As Jamie Oliver’s newest publishing home, we’re so proud to offer his latest books as physical and digital braille publications in conjunction with the release of the standard print editions. Our partnership with NNELS is an extension of Jamie Oliver’s personal mission to create a more inclusive and equitable space for all readers, allowing them access to his latest recipes and stories in a format that is most accessible to them. We’re excited to see the response to these milestone editions and look forward to partnering with NNELS again on future projects.”
— Beth Lockley, Vice-President, Marketing
Penguin Random House Canada
There is often a delay between when a title is published in conventional formats to when it is available in braille. Braille readers are often waiting months, years, or longer for a book to be developed into good quality, human-transcribed braille. With the support of the Government of Canada’s Social Development Partnerships Program – Disability Component, NNELS established the Braille for Forthcoming Publications Project to help close this gap. Under this project, 5 Ingredients Mediterranean will be the first cookbook NNELS has produced in braille simultaneously with its print counterpart.
"We are thrilled to announce the simultaneous release of two exceptional books by Jamie Oliver in braille format! The partnership with Penguin Random House Canada to make this possible is a testament to our unwavering commitment to make books accessible to all readers, regardless of ability. Braille is a vital bridge to knowledge and empowerment for people who are blind, and we are proud to have these braille titles in the NNELS collection, so that blind individuals can experience the joy of reading these remarkable books.”
— Daniella Levy-Pinto, Manager
National Network for Equitable Library Service
In Canada, the embossed copies of both titles are available through interlibrary loan. Thanks to Cochrane Public Library in Cochrane, Alberta for hosting these books! We are also very happy to share that at Jamie Oliver’s request, physical braille editions of 5 Ingredients Mediterranean and Billy and the Giant Adventure will be donated to the library collection of the Braille Institute, a non-profit organization based in the United States whose mission is to positively transform the lives of those with vision loss. The digital braille editions of both books will also be available to other countries around the world through the service provided by the Accessible Books Consortium, a public-private partnership led by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Putting you first: a tailored approach to CPP and OAS appeals at the General Division
I’m pleased to introduce new deadlines to send us documents for Canada Pension Plan (including disability) and Old Age Security (including Guaranteed Income Supplement) appeals at the General Division. We understand that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t always meet people’s needs. That’s why we'll now set deadlines for new appeals according to the type of appeal.
For CPP disability appeals, appellants now have 8 months to send us their documents. For other CPP and OAS appeals, appellants now have 3 months.
This tailored approach will serve you better by:
• Putting you first: We'll set deadlines that make sense for your type of appeal.
• Being flexible: If you think you need more time, you can ask for it.
• Giving you the decision sooner: Setting the right deadlines means that we can complete your appeal faster.
We invite you to check out our updated appeal process infographics:
• Your Canada Pension Plan disability appeal at a glance
• Your other Canada Pension Plan appeal at a glance
• Your Old Age Security or Guaranteed Income Supplement appeal at a glance
If you have any questions about this new approach, contact us. Your feedback is invaluable as we work together to improve access to justice.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation – Selection Process for President and CEO Position
The Government of Canada has launched a selection process to fill the position of President and CEO of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). We want to ensure that you and your organization’s members are aware of this selection process and have the opportunity to participate. The Notice of Appointment Opportunity and associated news release were published on November 7, 2023.
CMHC is a federal Crown corporation that plays a critical role as a national convenor in the housing finance system, and through research, program development and delivery, and commercial operations, is a vital contributor to the sustainability and stability of Canada’s housing system. Its mandate is: “to promote housing affordability and choice, facilitate access to, and competition and efficiency in the provision of, housing finance, protect the availability of adequate funding for housing at low cost, and generally contribute to the well-being of the housing sector in the national economy”. Housing affordability has become an increasingly important issue to Canadians, and CMHC plays a key role in the federal government’s efforts to address this growing challenge.
CMHC works with all levels of government as well as the private and non-profit sectors to promote housing affordability, advance climate compatibility, and achieve better outcomes for communities that face inequities, while promoting the stability of Canada’s housing finance system. It does this by:
• Providing commercial products including residential and multi-unit mortgage loan insurance and providing lenders reliable access to mortgage funding;
• Remaining at the forefront of research, data and forecasting, filling knowledge gaps and developing policy ideas for decision makers; and
• Actively participating in the development and delivery of housing programs, such as the National Housing Strategy, for people whose housing needs are not being met by the market.
CMHC has six offices across Canada in Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. CMHC employs approximately 2,300 people and ranks as the largest federal Crown Corporation with total revenues of $6.1 billion, a net income of $1.6 billion in 2022, and approximately $297 billion in assets.
To fill the CMHC President and CEO position, we are looking for candidates with experience in the following key areas (among other qualifications, as set out in the Notice of Appointment Opportunity):
Housing: Strong knowledge of housing and financial markets both domestically and internationally, and their role in macroeconomic policy; and An ability to influence and lead in orienting housing markets, financial regulation, partnership and public resources towards achieving a right to housing for all Canadians;
Financial Services: Knowledge of the financial management of a large financial services organization and skilled in risk management;
CMHC: Knowledge of CMHC’s housing policy and legislative mandate and activities, and of land and asset management;
Change Management: Demonstrated success in leading an organization through transformative change, at exploring new ideas and developing and implementing a complex strategy;
Public Sector: Knowledge of the Government’s social, economic and fiscal policies and priorities, and its role in housing;
Stakeholder Relations: A strong history of building and maintaining productive and effective multipartite relationships with partner organizations, diverse stakeholders, and senior government officials.
The Government’s rigorous approach to Governor in Council appointments is built on an open, transparent and merit-based selection process that allows for the recommendation of high-quality candidates who reflect Canada’s diversity.
We encourage you to share the attached Notice of Appointment Opportunity with those who you feel may be suited for this position and via your social media platforms. Please consult the links below for existing social media posts which you may choose to replicate.
