Designing for Children
When: Thursday, August 3, 2023 | 2:30 PM - 4:00 AM Eastern Time Zone
What: Webinar
About: Children with disabilities need accessible design that differs from design for adults with disabilities, such as the dimensions of sinks and drinking fountains, dining surfaces, water closets and toilet compartments, and handrails. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Accessibility Standards provide requirements that ensure daycare's, preschools, elementary schools, play facilities, and children’s museums are designed with accessibility for children with disabilities. This webinar will review the scoping and technical requirements in the ADA and ABA Standards for spaces and elements specifically designed for use by people with disabilities who are 12 years old and younger. Presenters will discuss accessibility requirements for toilet rooms, classrooms, play areas and components, and ground surfaces. Special guest speaker Bill Botten will present and impart his knowledge from decades of accessibility advocacy for children and recreation.
This webinar will include video remote interpreting (VRI) and real-time captioning. Participants may submit questions in advance of the webinar during the registration process or may ask questions during the live session.

Public engagement on permanent public transit funding - What We Heard Report
In Fall 2022, Infrastructure Canada completed a national public engagement on Canada’s first permanent public transit fund. The fund will disburse on average $3 billion annually, beginning in 2026-27, and will help improve access to public transit and active transportation while driving enhanced economic, environmental, social, and housing outcomes in communities across Canada.
We received a strong response from our transit partners and stakeholders across the country. Thank you to all those who participated, your feedback is critical to this process.
I am pleased to share a summary report with you. This report presents key stakeholder messages heard through our engagement process and outlines principles that will guide the design and implementation of permanent public transit funding as we continue to work with our transit partners toward the program launch.
If you have any questions, please contact us at transit-mobilite@infc.gc.ca with the term “Permanent Public Transit Funding” in the subject line.
Thank you for working with us to improve the quality of life for all Canadians through investments in public transit.
Sincerely,
Gerard Peets
Assistant Deputy Minister, Infrastructure Canada

Funding Opportunities and Announcements
On behalf of the Federal Anti-Racism Secretariat, I am pleased to provide you with information on several upcoming funding opportunities and announcements.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Immigration Act commonly known as the ‘Chinese Exclusion Act,’ which banned people of Chinese origin from entering Canada.
During the Government of Canada’s official Asian Heritage Month celebration in Ottawa on May 29, 2023, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, announced the designation of the Exclusion of Chinese Immigrants as an event of national historic significance under Parks Canada's National Program of Historical Commemoration. National historic designations are a way to acknowledge and to learn about the full scope of our shared history, including the difficult periods that are part of our past.
Since 2020, the Federal Anti-Racism Secretariat has convened a multitude of consultations, forums, and commemorations with members of Asian communities to inform the Government of Canada’s policy, legal and programmatic response to anti-Asian racism, including in the context of COVID-19. These have included: Townhall consultations; a series of virtual roundtable discussions as well as Asian Heritage Month commemoration events. The Federal Secretariat has also worked with a wide range of community leaders of Asian heritage to jointly develop an official definition of anti-Asian racism, first published on the Government of Canada's Asian Heritage Month web page, in May 2021, and then added to Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy.
For this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination the Federal Anti-Racism Secretariat organized and hosted the international virtual forum: “Anti-Racism in North America: Countering the Backlash.” Hosted on March 30, 2023, the event featured notable Canadian, American and Mexican speakers such as:
- Senator María Celeste Sánchez Sugía, Mexican Senate (Mexico City),
- Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences of UNESCO (Mexico-Paris)
- Desirée Cormier-Smith, Special Representative for Racial Equity and Justice, U.S Department of State (USA)
- Mohammed Hashim, Executive Director, Canadian Race Relation Foundation (Canada)
- Roda Muse, Secretary General, Canadian Commission for UNESCO (Canada)
Included in this publication you will find the transcript of this rich conversation for those of you who missed the whole event or part of the discussion. In addition, with the list of funding announcements, data products, and other information provided through this message, we hope that you find the enclosed material useful.
The Federal Anti-Racism Secretariat is committed to continuing working with you in our collective effort towards eliminating all forms of systemic racism, discrimination and hate in Canada.
Best regards,
Peter Flegel
