IRIS
Announcement: Change in IRIS’ Managing Director
Hello IRIS partners and communities,
We’re reaching out to you, our valued friends, colleagues and partners, to announce that Dr. Michael Bach has decided to step down as Managing Director of IRIS, and that the IRIS Board has appointed Dr. Doris Rajan to this role effective July 1, 2024.
Over his many years with the Institute, Michael has been instrumental in growing IRIS’ research and development capacity on a wide range of disability rights issues – individualized funding, deinstitutionalization, education, employment, disability and community supports. His extensive research on legal capacity and the right to decide – has made important contributions to the work of making structural change happen. In doing so, he has fostered a local-to-global role for IRIS. Despite his decision to step down from his position as Managing Director, we are pleased he will continue with IRIS on a part-time basis as Senior Advisor, working closely with Doris and our partners in helping to reimagine policies so that our society is designed with everyone in mind.
“We’re so grateful and thrilled that Michael will continue on in this work. His knowledge and passion for the communities we serve and his tireless work to end the structures of marginalization in our society are at the heart of everything IRIS stands for.” – Dr. Doris Rajan.
The appointment of Michael’s successor from within the organization is an illustration of the strong foundations that IRIS is built upon. Since Doris joined IRIS over twenty years ago, she has been building our unique intersectional and solidarity approach and applied it to many projects with the aim of ensuring that marginalized peoples are the ones driving the reimagining and redesigning of the structures that govern society. With her decades of experience in the non-profit sector and focus on confronting gender-based violence, and marginalization in disability, Deaf, Black, racialized, migrant, and Indigenous communities, as well as holding a doctorate in Adult Education and Community Development, Doris brings vast experience and expertise to her new role as Managing Director.
“Stepping back from the role would have been daunting without knowing Doris would be the one taking over. Since joining the Institute, her intellectual rigor, integrity and empathy paired with her creativity and energy have transformed IRIS into an organization with genuine, meaningful connections with diverse communities across the country.” – Michael Bach
Although this announcement may come as a surprise to many, internal discussions have been ongoing for many months to ensure not only a smooth transition but also a clear path to even greater impact in the future. Over the coming months, IRIS, under Doris Rajan’s leadership, will be launching several new initiatives designed to shine a brighter light on our essential work.
With kindness and optimism,
Clovis Grant, Chair & Fiona Whittington-Walsh, Vice-Chair
